4 Things You Need To Know About Cheating On The Keto Diet

I’m finally about a month into the keto diet, and I can officially say that I love it! That says a lot coming from someone who could eat an entire loaf of bread to herself in one sitting. The keto diet is easy to follow, makes you feel full and satisfied, and has quick results. It’s the kind of diet that becomes a healthy lifestyle, which is exactly what we should all be striving for! After detailing my first day on the keto diet, and then my entire first week on the keto diet, I figured I would take a turn and share some things about cheating on the keto diet.
Even as much as I love keto and as easy as it is to follow, I’ve still cheated. While I don’t love that I’ve cheated, the up side is that I’ve learned some important lessons. If you’re interested in keto, here are the things you need to know about cheating on the keto diet.
It’s Not A Small Set Back
The goal of the keto diet is to get your body into ketosis. If you don’t already know, ketosis is a regular metabolic process that your body does to keep itself working. When your body runs out of carbs to burn for it’s energy source, it switches gears and starts burning fat instead. As part of the ketosis process, your body also makes ketones, which are chemicals made in your liver. So basically, once you enter ketosis, your liver turns fat into ketones and sends them off into your bloodstream where they’re delivered to your muscles and other tissues for fuel. The important thing to note about this process is that it doesn’t happen in a few hours or even overnight. It takes about three to four days of this diet for your body to be in ketosis.
When you cheat on the keto diet, you’re setting your progress back by multiple days. Considering the process, cheating on the keto diet once a week means that your body never really enters ketosis long enough to have the promising results that so many people experience. This is something that you should really keep in mind before you decide to indulge in some carbs one day.
P.S. If you don’t know how to tell if you’re in ketosis, I highly recommend ketone testing strips! They’re little sticks you pee on and in fifteen seconds you know how effective your diet is. Well worth the minimal cost!!

There’s A Quick Fix
We all love the idea of a “quick fix” but there are so few TRULY quick fixes that I’m always skeptical about anything that claims to have immediate results. I believe that results come from diligence and hard work, and taking an easy route usually doesn’t heed long term results. That being said, there is a quick fix for those times that you decide to cheat with whatever your dream carb filled meal is.
Keto Magic is a ketone supplement that helps you reach ketosis faster than your body would naturally. This drink uses ketone supplements to raise your blood ketone levels and help you reach ketosis in as little as fifteen minutes. Additionally, it helps you avoid the dreaded keto flu and keeps you well hydrated with extra electrolytes. While I don’t think this drink should be used as a way to justify and excuse regular cheating, it is extremely helpful after occasional cheats when you don’t want to wait another three to four days to get back into ketosis.
It Needs To Be Worth It
If you do decide that you’re going to cheat on the keto diet, make sure it’s worth it. Cheat with carby food that you really truly love, rather than something mediocre and forgettable. I’ve experienced both sides of cheating on the keto diet already. I’m telling you that it’s not regrettable when it’s something that you really enjoy and appreciate. When I had some serious hormonal cravings and ate some greasy fried mushrooms and drank my favorite kind of milkshake, it was absolutely worth it despite having to wait a few days before my body kicked itself back into ketosis. On the flip side, when I had some late night granola bars (yes, there’s an s and I did eat more than one) because I was feeling snacky, I totally regretted letting that ruin my ketosis and I beat myself up for the few days after.
It’s Going To Happen
One of the most important things to remember about cheating on the keto diet is that it’s going to happen sometimes, and that’s okay! Even the most serious dieters cheat sometimes, and there are times that it’s totally worth it. Also, you can’t let a diet stop you from enjoying life. When you go on vacation, forget the diet and eat the unusual foods you don’t normally get a chance to eat. When your birthday comes up, let yourself indulge in your favorite kind of cake. Do those things, and most importantly, don’t feel bad about it!
You have to remember that occasionally cheating does not make you a failure and you shouldn’t beat yourself up over it. Enjoy your cheat meal (or day) and then get back into the swing of it the next day. Recommit to the lifestyle that’s helping you become a healthier version of you!
